13th century Cilgerran Castle stands on a precipitous, craggy promontory overlooking a
steep gorge in the Teifi Valley(just at the rivers tidal limit) / An earth and timber castle is
believed to have been built around 1100 / Traditionally, medieval castles were designed
with a keep or strong tower at the centre but Cilgerran Castle is unusual in having a pair of
highly defensible round towers / by the early 18th century Cilgerran Castle was a ruin /
It has inspired artists for centuries and was one of Wales's first tourist attractions / Victorian
tourists used to visit Cilgerran by boating up the river from Cardigan / Turner was drawn
to paint the romantic ruins.
