Victorian Penfold Pillar Box - Neyland - at the junction of Station Rd and
Picton Road / High St.

An Hexagonal Cast Iron Box with the top decorated with Acanthus Leaves and Balls ,
designed by architect John Penfold , manufactured by Cochrane Grove & Co.of Dudley.
Originally sited on the Railway Station.

The Penfold Victorian Pillar Box was manufactured in 3 sizes and 5 types
( slight modifications of the original design) , between 1866 - 1879.
The original boxes had a Royal Cipher below the aperture with an inward opening
enamelled flap bearing the words LETTERS .

The Neyland Box is one of the type with the Queen Victoria Royal Cipher above an open
aperture , the collection plate has a moulded surround and the door has protruding hinges -
the most common type of Penfold with 60 + boxes remaining.
