Near Carew Castle / Standing at 14 feet high / making it the tallest cross in Wales. A
magnificent eleventh-century decorated Cross, a royal memorial to Maredudd ap Edwin of
Deheubarth (now south west wales ) - killed in battle (1035) by Cynan ab Seisyllt .
The Cross consists of two parts the / top section of the cross is wheel shaped
with a short neck and is fitted into the bottom shaft by a tendon joint .
The Cross is inlaid with fine Celtic knot-work and interlaced ribbon pattern, its two sides
displaying different variations / predominantly Celtic in style , but plaitwork patterns
and swastikas also reflect Scandinavian influence.
Carew and a similar Celtic Cross at Nevern Church are two of the largest and most
elaborate early Christian monuments in Wales , and provides the inspiration
for the symbol of Cadw.
