St Dogmael's Abbey was originally founded in 1113-15 / as a Tironian (Benedictine) abbey
by Robert fitz Martin ( Lord of Cemais ) / on a site occupied by a pre-Norman monastery .
The monks owned the Isle of Caldey, which became a popular pilgrimage centre in the Middle Ages.
The abbey was dissolved in 1536 / described as a ruin in 1603 / With the exception of the
infirmary, the north transept and the north nave wall of the abbey church, little has survived .
The Church holds the "Sagranus Stone", from the 5th century is inscribed in both Latin and
Ogham script and was the key for deciphering the Ogham alphabet.
