5.3 - Ramsey Island
Ramsey Island ( in welsh "Ynys Dewi" - St David's Island )
The name Ramsey may derive from the Old Norse "Hranfn-ey" , Hfran's Island / or "Hrafns-ey", Ravens Island / or possibly Hramsa - Wild Garlic.
The Island is about 2 miles x 1 mile and lies close to the Welsh Coast / 0.5miles from St David's Peninsula / over the treacherous swift flowing waters of Ramsey Sound / 650 acres of heathland and maritime grassland .

GEOLOGY :- A range of rocks from Ordovician to Mid-Cambrian , some sedimentary but mainly Igneous.

Birds - Choughs , Ravens , Peregrines .
Guillemots (3,000) , Razorbills (1800) , Fulmars (600) , Kittewakes (400) - breed on the western cliffs of Ramsey - May / July .
Manx Shearwater (4,000) .
A large colony of Atlantic Grey Seals with about 300 pups born each year . Seal Pups on the beaches - Mid August / Sept / October.
/ Red Deer may be seen / with good views from the Peaks - Carnysgubor ( Ordovician Gabbro ) - 101m and Carnlludan ( Volcanic Tuffs ) - 136m / seabirds on the cliffs below .
Buildings :- an 18th century farmhouse and Bungalow (1908) .
Remains of burial chambers on the hills / fossils on carnysgubor / 2 ruined chapels - one to St Justinian .
On the east coast jutting into Ramsey Sound , are the dangerous rocks - "The Bitches" , and in the middle of the sound another rock - " The Horse " .
2 miles to the west are the " Bishops and Clerks "/ a series of rocks and islets / with a lighthouse on South Bishop (1839) .
To the south are the Islands - Ynys Cantwr ( The Chanter's Isle ), Ynys Bery ( Falcon's Isle ) , and other rocks and skerries .
