5.1 - Caldey Island
Caldey Island ( in welsh "Ynys Byr" - Pyro's Island )
The name Caldey may derive from the Old Norse "Kaldr-ey" , Cold Island.
The island is 1.5 miles x .75 miles / 500 acres / 2 miles south of Tenby .

GEOLOGY:- the north of the Island is Carboniferous Limestone / Old Red Sandstone to the South.

Early monastery founded by St Pyr . Viking raids closed the community in the 10th century.
Benedictine monks from Tiron in Normandy established the first abbey in 1131.
The Priory was dissolved by Henry V111 in 1536 , and the monks expelled .
In 1906 an Anglican Benedictine brotherhood bought the Island and built the present Monastery .
The Order of Reformed cistercians taking over in 1925/9.
A lighthouse (1829) , stands on the islands summit . Good views over the Island and South Pembrokeshire coast . Lundy Island 30 miles to south .
Fine Sandy Beach at Priory Bay - adjoining the landing area .
Atlantic Grey Seal colony along the south of the island .
The adjoining Island of St Margaret's is a Nature Reserve / subject to extensive Quarrying in the past / remains of 3 buildings .
Island abandoned in 1851. Large Cormorant Colony and Guillemots , Razorbills , Kittiwake .
