4.8 - NEWPORT - CEIBWR BAY
Distance 6 miles.
This and the next section are the toughest to walk on the whole route .
With the highest , most spectacular cliffs in West Wales.
From the Parrog / path goes round the estuary / and over the Iron Bridge , then along the northern bank - which may be flooded on very high tides - ( long diversion ! ). The Estuary is good for wading birds .
Path continues through the Golf Course / Car Park / with " Traeth Mawr " the Big Beach of Newport below , one of pembrokeshires finest / and a popular area . Bee Orchids may be found in the sand dunes . Then up to Morfa Head through a heathland nature reserve .
The rocks are layers of sandstone and mudstone of the Late Ordovician Period - 440 million yrs old , on a long wild stretch of coast with steep sheer cliffs.
Grey Seals breed along the coast , and seabirds - guillemots / razorbills / fulmars / --- nest on the inaccessable cliffs .
Path reaches its highest point over 500ft / nr Foel Goch , on a long level section of path .
Then drops steeply in places , passing the stack "Careg Yspar" to "Traeth Bach" .
With the "Witches Cauldron" (Pwll.y.Wrach ) / one of the best blowholes on the coast / a Sea Cave whose roof collapsed / forming an attractive cove with a natural bridge ( the caves original entrance ).
Path climbs up , passing caves/arches and the stack "Careg Wylan" just before Ceibwr Bay.
Car Park - Newport Parrog , Newport Sands , Ceibwr Bay.
Bus - " Poppit Rocket " - Newport Parrog , Newport Sands , Molygrove ( FP down Cwm Trewyddel to Ceibwr ).
