4.5 - STRUMBLE HEAD - GOODWICK

A distance of about 6.5 Miles .
---------------------------------
From the Lighthouse ( Light visible for 30 miles ), the path passes a World War 2 lookout post - now a shelter for wildlife watching .

Volcanic eruptions (450 million years ago) , through the sea bed , cooled rapidly and produced " Pillow Lava ". Having the appearance of pillows , one on top of the other . Basalt Pillow Lavas can be seen below the Lookout post and further along the coast , especially Porthsychan Bay .

Fine views from Pen Caer along the North Pembrokeshire Coast to Cemaes Head / Cardigan Island .

Then along a rugged , rocky , coastline with many coves and headlands . An area rich in wild flowers in spring , and seals in many of the bays .

The path drops down to pass Porthsychan Bay , and an isolated white cottage near the path at Penrhyn . More bays are passed before reaching the Memorial at Carregwastad Point , commemorating a French - Napoleonic Naval Adventure.
On the 22nd Feb 1797 / 1400 French Soldiers from 4 ships , ( 600 troops and 800 released convicts, called Legion Noire ) , came ashore at Carregwastad Point . The french looted farms , becoming drunk , forcing a surrender on Goodwick Sands to local Yeomanry . The invasion lasted 3 days .
The path drops to another well wooded valley and around the large bay - Aber Felin . Views from Carnfathach .The path moves away from the coast near Anglas Bay / missing Pen Anglas . There is path to the headland to see its famous columns of Dolerite .

Rejoin path and nearing the houses at Harbour Village / 3 Burial Chambers can be seen / many more where destroyed when the Harbour and Railway where built , at the base of the cliff .
Another Burial Chamber is of the track to Pen-rhiw Farm . A plaque can be found just before the farm to Denys Corbett Wilson , who made the first flight to Ireland in 1912 .

The path leads to a road / follow FP sign on left , as it drops down and crosses the Railway by a metal bridge / to Fishguard Harbour , near Goodwick Quay (a short distance to the left ).
