4.4 - ABER MAWR - STRUMBLE HEAD
A distance of about 6.5 miles .

Seals breed along this part of the coast ( Sept / Oct / Nov) .
From Aber Mawr the path heads north to Aber Bach , another attractive beach with a shingle bank , formed from material transported here as a result of rising sea levels at the end of the Ice Age , and a nice wooded valley behind . Sand Martins breed in the low cliffs between Aber Mawr and Aber Bach.
Then Pwllcrochan Bay / sandy beach at low tides / difficult access ! / with a fine "Anticline" in the cliff face .
Past the headland ( Penbwchdy ) , a heather clad ridge 1 mile long is reached , on near vertical cliffs . View points on the way , to Pwll Deri , below the towering mass of Garn Fawr . A popular Spot / Car parking / great views along the coast to St David`s . Even better views from the top of Garn Fawr - 700ft . On a clear day , the Wicklow mountains of Southern Ireland can be seen .
The path joins a road passing a memorial to the poet Dewi Emrys and then the Youth Hostel .
Opposite the YH is a footpath which leads to Garn Fawr and gives fantastic views on a clear day.
The Coast path heads down hill to pass Dinas Mawr / then around Porth Maenmelyn ( a private beach ) ! , steps cut in the rock face + a rope at the bottom !.
Volcanic magma / erupted underwater / cooled rapidly and solidified / producing spectacular piles of basalt pillow lava / creating the rocks seen from Porth Maenmelyn around the northern coast of the Pen Caer Penninsula / about 450 million years ago .
Passing Pen Bush headland / the path continues over volcanic rocks and heathland / past Carreg Onnen Bay to Strumble Lighthouse on "Ynys Meicel" .
Lighthouse built 1908 - an automatic station - flashing 4 times every 15 seconds , + a foghorn .
An excellent Area for birds migrating in spring / autumn , and seals , porpoise .....
As at St David`s Head / the nocturnal bird " Manx Shearwater" / streams past the Headland in the morning and evening ( May-Sept ).
