4-GALLERIES-NORTH COAST

4 - WHITESANDS - ST DOGMAELS
A distance of about 59+ miles.
------------------------------
The Path in this area passes through an increasingly rugged coast , as it moves to its highest point - 575ft- on Cemaes Head.

There are lots of long lonely stretches / most buildings are inland / out of reach of the winter gales / with plenty of steep climbs .

Although the heights attained are not great , the sheer cliffs which plunge straight into the sea make the views impressive.

The toughest section is the last , or the first if travelling - north to south , between Newport - St Dogmaels.

On a very high tide - a diversion may be required on the path out of Newport along the Nevern Estuary.

Excellent beaches :- Whitesands , Newport Sands , Poppit Sands.
----------------------------------
Basic COAST GEOLOGY :-
Tectonic plate activity , 400 MYA (million years ago ), the Caledonian (Acadian) mountain building episode ( Orogeny ) , Created the folding and faulting in the rock strata / visible around the coast in the North of Pembrokeshire.
-------------------------------
The North Pembrokeshire coast is predominantly Ordovician sedimentary and Ordovician Volcanic - ORDOVICIAN PERIOD - 440 / 495 MYA.
