3.9 - PORTH CLAIS - ST JUSTINIAN`S
A distance of about 5 miles .
-------------------------------
Porth Clais is at the mouth of the River Alun , in a valley carved out by glacial meltwater 10,000 to 5,000 years ago , a drowned valley , a Ria.
In Welsh folklore the Giant Wild Boar " Twrch Trwyth " forced out of Ireland came ashore here , pursued by King Arthur and his Knights .
Port Clais has 4 lime kilns and old quarries at the head of the inlet . An area rich in wild spring flowers .
St David was baptised by St Elvis at Porth Clais , in water from a miraculous spring , in the area of the NT Car Park .
The path follows the west side of the Harbour , a side path leads down to Cae Coch Quay .
The rugged coast continues passing Carreg Fran just offshore and the island Carreg Yr Esgob , with a narrow arch just visible . The path then turns inland , to drop down to the bay at Porthlysgi .
Around the coast , and on the islands between Porthlysgi / Ramsey sound , can be seen some of the oldest rocks in Pembrokeshire , Pre - Cambrian , 1,000 million years old.
On to a cove with the strange name of " Ogof Mrs Morgan " .
Then , Pen Dal-aderyn with excellent views to Ramsey Island ( Ynys Dewi - St David`s Island ) 3/4 mile away , across the Sound .
A good spot for watching gannets feeding . And seals and porpoise , taking advantage of the fish brought to the surface by the swift flowing waters , at up to 7 knots , through the sound .
"The Bitches" , in the narrowest part of the Sound , a dangerous strip of sea , with a series of rocks , submerged at high tide .
Views also to the smaller islands south of Ramsey - "Ynys Cantwr" (The Enchanters Isle ) , "Ynys Bery" ( Falcon`s Isle ) ,"Ynys Eilun" .
Further on just passed a fenced area is an old shaft of Penmaen Melyn C19 copper mine / just above the path is a large "Glacial Erratic" transported to this spot 7000yrs ago .
