3.8 - SOLVA - PORTH CLAIS

Distance about 4 miles .

Path follows a spectacular , rugged , rocky , wild stretch of coastline with steep cliffs between two charming ports.

Solva is an attractive village , with shops , cafe , and a sheltered harbour , full of pleasure crafts , and an inn .

Path passes a good viewpoint , over the harbour and adjacent cove , both carved out by glacial meltwater 10,000 to 5,000 years ago .
Then arrives at Porth Y Rhaw / iron age Hill fort /with distinctive banks and ditches / 500BC / one of the 50+forts around the coast.

In the cove to the west / In 1862 / the folded dark shales (Cambrian) , yielded one of the largest Trilobite fossils ever found - 50cm long .

Near Carreg Y Barcud ( Barcud is welsh for Red Kite / Buzzard ) / impressive folding in the "Jasper" purple sandstones ( lower cambrian ) , can be seen with views over to Caer Bwdy Bay - Where Purple Sandsone ( 540 Million Years Old ) was recently quarried / for restoration work on St David's Cathedral .

The next Bay , Caerfai , has a popular , sheltered , sandy beach , down a steep path / Car Park nearby .

St Nons Bay is next , named after the mother of St David . A ruined chapel ( 1300 ) on the site of the birthplace of St David ( 462 ) / nearby St Nons well - renowned for curing eye diseases . Present chapel built 1934 , the Retreat built 1929 .

Porth Clais appears without warning from this direction , and is the former harbour for the City of St David's , a small narrow inlet , for fishing boats and pleasure craft , with lime kilns at its head .
