3.7 - NEWGALE - SOLVA
A distance of about 5.5 Miles .
----------------------------------
Newgale has a superb beach , over 2 miles , with a storm bank of pebbles and shingle thrown ashore by the sea . The pebbles were transported here by rising sea levels at the end of the Ice age. A popular area for Surfing .
To the north end of the beach is Brandy Brook , the western end of the 'Landsker' / the defensive line fortified by Norman Castles from Roch through Haverford West to Amroth . Protecting the Anglo - Norman settlements of South Pembrokeshire from the ancient Welsh North . On maps , place names north of the Brandy are mainly - Welsh , and to the south - English .
Route from Newgale follows the main road over the Brandy Brook to a FP sign up the hill .
Good views over Newgale Beach and the coast .
Path drops to Cwm Mawr and allows access to Penycwm Beach , with the exposed Cambrian sedimentary rock of this area visible . At low tide Newgale beach can be reached along the sand .
Further on an interesting valley leads down to a cove 'Porthmynawyd' ( Pointz Castle Beach ) just before Dinas Fach Peninsula (with a blowhole near its head ) is reached / Views to Ramsey Island .
The path to Dinas Fach is strenuous as it follows an undulating landscape / the route climbs in and out of a number of valleys.
' Dinas Fawr ' the second fine peninsula on the way to Solva , is soon reached , erosion has resulted in a dangerous / tricky path on the peninsula .
Path continues to Solva with wild flowers in early summer , passing a sandy beach at the mouth of a silted glacial channel ' Gwadn ' valley .
Climbing up to the ' Gribin ' ridge with good views over Solva harbour , another glacial channel , and passed a set of Limekilns on the shore .
