3 - SANDY HAVEN - WHITESANDS

After fording the tidal creeks at Sandy Haven and The Gann (Dale ) , there should be no further problems on the path to Whitesands.

Excellent Beaches at Marloes Sands , Broad Haven (NORTH) , Newgale , Whitesands .

Path passes Skomer Island , to the south of St Brides Bay , and Ramsey Island , to the north .

COAST GEOLOGY -
Folds / faults in the rock strata were caused :-
South of Newgale by the Variscan Orogeny , 290 million years ago , at the end of the Carboniferous Period.
North of Newgale by the Acadian Orogeny , 400 million years ago , Devonian Period.

Old Red Sandstone Initally - ( DEVONIAN PERIOD - 360 / 420 million years old ) .

With Silurian sedimentary at Marloes and Silurian Volcanic at Wooltack Point / Skomer Island - ( SILURIAN PERIOD - 420 / 440 million years ).

Coal Measures and some Millstone Grit - ( CARBONIFEROUS PERIOD - 290 / 360 million years ) , reappear between Little Haven / Newgale .

From Newgale the younger rocks of South Pembrokeshire give way to the much Older Cambrian Rocks - ( CAMBRIAN PERIOD - 495 / 545 million years ) , with some even older Pre Cambrian at St Davids .
