The South Pembrokeshire Limestone is the deepest in Great Britain / up to 1200 m thick .
Some of the Blowholes / Sinkholes in this area have been fenced off .
Stackpole Quay was an 18th century development / exporting Limestone and Importing Coal for the Stackpole Estate of the Cawdors . The estate , now National Trust , the great house having been demolished in 1963.
Part of the Stackpole Estate is within the Stackpole National Nature Reserve - an SSSI - with important Geological and Biological Features.
Orchids can be seen in the Sand Dunes and Coastal Grassland / e.g - Early Purple Orchid in Late April ....... Autumn Lady's Tresses in August / Sept ( photos - 6.3 )
Barafundle Beach is one of Pembrokeshire's most famous / voted the most beautiful beach in Britain / unspoilt with golden sands .
Cliffs on either side of the bay with sand retreating into dunes and woods.
The Beach is reached through a gateway , by a stone flight of steps ( once lined with ornate columns and trees ) / from the times of the Cawdors .
Path climbs up from the beach and past a natural arch " Lattice Windows " / then along a dramatic coastline and on to Stackpole Head / then passing Mowingword , a narrow headland / and Gun Cliff with Pinnacle Stack , eroding in the bay below / passed a large Sinkhole (doline) - Sandy Pit (a collapsed cave) / round Saddle Point with a large Blowhole and Natural Arch / then Broad Haven beach appears on the left .
Near a footbridge - paths away from the coast allow Bosherton Lakes / Lily Ponds ( flowering june / july - best in june ), to be visited / possible glimpse of an Otter .
Broad Haven has an impressive beach / golden sands / dunes.
Car Park - Stackpole Quay (NT), Broad Haven(NT) .
Bus - "Coastal Cruiser" , visits most major car parks , as far as West Angle (see links page ).
