6.7 - Marine - Fauna / Flora
The deep waters off Pembrokeshire are excellent areas to see Cetaceans.
With sightings of Bottlenose Dolphins , Common Dolphins , Rissos Dolphins , Short - beaked Common Dolphin , Harbour Porpoises , Fin Whales , Minke Whale.
The Pembrokeshire Marine Special Area of Conservation ( designated in December 2004 ) is one of the best in Europe for its rich marine wildlife.
The site extends from near Abereiddy in north Pembrokeshire to Manorbier in South Pembrokeshire and includes the coast of the islands of Ramsey, Skomer, Grassholm, Skokholm, the Bishops and Clerks, The Smalls , and almost the entire Milford Haven Waterway.
Features include :-
CAVES under the sea or partially submerged sea caves are distributed widely throughout the area .
MUD and SAND FLATS shelter large diverse communities of invertebrates and algae and particularly important as feeding grounds for wildfowl and waders.
LAGOONS - expanses of shallow coastal salt water, of varying salinity and water volume, wholly or partially cut off from the sea by sandbanks or shingle, e.g Pickleridge Lagoon , Neyland Weir Pool , Carew Mill Pond .
Extensive areas of subtidal rocky REEF stretch offshore from the west Pembrokeshire coast, surrounding, between and westwards from the offshore islands and many small rocky islets.
SALT MARSHES develop between the mean high and low water marks in areas of soft sediments (mud or fine sand) that are relatively sheltered from wave action.
SANDBANKS that are permanently covered by shallow sea water in the vicinity of Skokholm , and sandbanks associated with Grassholm Island. There are also deeper sandbanks associated with the Bishops & Clerks, Hats & Barrels and St Govan’s Shoals reefs and in the north-west and south-west of St Bride’s Bay.
OTTERS, Lutra lutra, can be found on estuaries and open shores , LAMPREYS are known within the Cleddau Rivers , ATLANTIC GREY SEALS , Halichoerus grypus, around the West Wales coast are the most southerly breeding population in Europe of one of the least common seal species.
The SKOMER MARINE NATURE RESERVE occurs within the site / The first Marine Conservation Zone in Wales / underwater studies set up here are pioneering marine ecology research.
The Skomer Marine Nature Reserve is one of only three marine nature reserves in the UK. This is the only one in Wales and is run by the Countryside Council for Wales.The CCW MNR staff team, based at Martin’s Haven monitor the seas around Skomer using many techniques, including diving and underwater photography.
There is a visitor centre next to the MNR office at Martin's Haven .
